Transitional Training: High/Low & Deep/Shallow with Javier Bergas del Rio (Aquatic Workshop) This

workshop will provide unique transitional training ideas to incorporate high and low intensity movement

patterns that can be adjusted for all levels of fitness and class participants. Learn how to maximize pool

space and use both deep and shallow water in one class to give endless opportunities for better health and

fitness through aquatic exercise.

Learning Objectives

• Learn how to combine low-impact aerobics movements with higher impact strength-training

movements to create a comprehensive fitness routine that supports heart health and weight loss.

• Learn how to combine shallow- and deep-water sequences/choreography.

• Learn how to adapt movements to both shallow and deep water.

• Differentiate between HIIT and Aerobic Continuous Variable Training

Treatment Strategies for Long COVID with Beth Scalone (Lecture)

Long Covid is a complex, variable and evolving syndrome in which COVID-19 patients continue to have

symptoms after recovering and testing negative.

This course will present the current evidence and best practice in addressing the needs of these

individuals including aquatic interventions to maximize the client’s recovery.

• Recognize and modify treatment plan potential cognitive impairments in

individuals with long COIVID-19

Dysfunction which would require referral to medical professional.

• Explore various aquatic interventions to the treatment approaches to improve

functional recovery in individuals post COVID-19 illness based on individual symptoms and fatigue

formula to create fun and effective choreography combinations to add to your classes today that works for

any teaching style.

Exercise that Enhances Fat Loss: Newest Findings with Len Kravitz (Lecture)

Join Len in one of the most comprehensive lectures ever explaining the detailed physiological and

metabolic aspects of fat metabolism, caloric expenditure and fat loss. Participants will learn, from a

cellular perspective, the newest research on the hormonal regulation of lipolysis during exercise, the

effect of exercise intensities on fat oxidation, and proven strategies to enhance caloric expenditure with

purposes. Explore examples for integrating Ai Chi to enhance balance & fall prevention, target agility

Take a deeper dive into the best practices for some of the most common populations that we work with in

the water. Learn what the research has to say about cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity when

it comes to aquatic exercise. We will explore how to translate the research into practice to make our

aquatic exercise classes more effective for these populations.

Beauty, Brains, or Brawn with Julie See (Aquatic Workshop)

Explore ways to alter your aquatic outcomes by adding personality to base moves. Beauty – adjust for a

graceful, fluid flow ideal for warm-ups, cool-downs, and recovery cycles. Brains – challenge cognition

with arm patterns, rhythm changes, and movement planes. Brawn – accentuate drag and add power to

add muscle to your moves.

Learning Objectives

• Compare steady state training to interval, in particular, HIIT formats.

• Understand how participants and clients benefit from putting movements together in sequence.

• Consider three ways to modify shallow-water base moves to alter the outcome of the activity –

balance-agility, coordination-cognition, and muscular resistance-power.

• Discuss applications and modifications for transitional depths or deep water.

Exercise for Strong Bones and Better Balance with Kim Huff (Lecture)

There are many exercise options for people concerned with bone density. Any program designed to

improve bone health should also include balance training. We will review different program formats that

include a variety of training techniques proved to be beneficial for bone density and modifications for

safely progressing balance exercise.

• Learn the benefits of cardiovascular exercise, strengthening exercises and power

training on improving and maintaining bone density.

• Review recent research on effective exercise protocols to improve or maintain

bone density.

• Understand the importance of including balance training in exercise programs to

improve bone density and techniques for modifying exercises to meet the needs of

the participants.

AquiQiDo with Gregory Keyes (Aquatic Workshop)

AquiQiDo is a unique new form of aquatic exercise that blends 3 styles of martial arts with self-defense

methodologies. The styles of martial arts are from Asia; one has a history going back 2000 years.

AquiQiDo utilizes many forms of music and cross-links HIIT, flexibility, actual self-defense techniques,

and various other forms of exercise science education.

Learning Objectives

• Explore the moves of ancient martial arts and those unique to AquiQiDo.

• Learn to combine the yin and yang of exercise with balance, flexibility, and range of motion plus selfdefense


• Understand teaching/learning techniques to assist with katas as the skills advance.

• Discuss the history of martial arts and the grading of instructor techniques and participant



Presenter Biographies


Javier Bergas del Rio, BS, AEA

Javier is a Primary School Teacher (sport and physical education specialist) and an AEA Training Specialist

passionate to transform research into workouts for exercise enthusiasts. He is an aquatic fitness and swim instructor,

specializing in programming for those with physical limitations, pregnant women, babies, and infants. Javier is coauthor

of several books and author of multiple articles relating to fitness, wellness, and aquatics.


Ashley Bishop, RAD RTS, AEA, ATRIC

Born and raised in British Columbia, Ashley spent the first ten years of her career working as a professional dancer in

Vancouver BC, a choreographer for Wyndham Resorts in Cozumel, Mexico, and a featured performer for Carnival

Cruise Lines. She is a certified Ballet Teacher (RAD), Personal Trainer (ACE), and a Group Exercise Instructor

(AFAA/AEA). Now living in Las Vegas, she is the Education Manager for AEA and travels the continent teaching

courses for fitness instructors. She is a Continuing Education Provider for ACE, AFAA and AEA, and an Aquatic

Training Specialist for the AEA. Ashley absolutely adores teaching, learning and sharing education with others.


Kimberly Huff, MS, CSCS, ATRIC, AEA

Kim is the Director of Fitness and Wellness for Acts Retirement Life Communities. She is certified through ACSM,

NSCA, AEA, ACE and is a Certified Health Education Specialist. Kim is an AEA Training Specialist and an ACE

Continuing Education Provider. She was a contributing author to the AEA AF Manual and the AEA Aquatic Fitness

Professional Manual.

Jackie Lebeau, MS, AEA

Jackie is the Senior Director for Fitness & Instruction at the University of Virginia. She holds a BS in exercise and

health promotion and a MS in sports administration. She is a continuing education provider for ACE, AEA and AFAA

and a Training Specialist for AEA. Jackie is the recipient of the Aquatic Fitness Professional of the Year award in

2020. A self-proclaimed “water baby” who loves all things aquatic.


Gregory Keyes, MS, AEA

Greg Keyes has represented Australia globally since 1986 in domains of leadership, performance

methodologies/concept creations/interpersonal communication, exercise science and special populations. A

published author of many programs including the Aqua-I-Cue Manual and an in-depth program on autism and

aquatics. He received 2 global awards from AEA, including the 2021 Global Lifetime Achievement with his wife,



Len Kravitz, PhD, CSCS

Len is a professor and program coordinator of exercise science at the University of New Mexico where he received

the Presidential Award of Distinction and the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award. In 2016 he was inducted into

the National Fitness Hall of Fame. Just recently, Len was honored with the Canfitpro Delegates Choice International

Presenter of the Year award.


Katrien Lemahieu, BS, AEA, ATRIC

Katrien has 25+ years of experience in the world of aquatics, both fitness and therapy related and has been an

International AEA Aquatic Training Specialist for over 10 years. She shows unique approaches to aquatics, as she is

practical based with theory in mind. She loves psychology and behavior, all with a movement perspective. She is an

energetic and diversely knowledgeable presenter who thrives on sharing knowledge. Katrien has received numerous

awards including 2 Aqua-Emma’s, the ATRI Tsunami Spirit award, and an AEA’s Aquatic Fitness Professional award.

Beth Scalone, PT, DPT, OCS, ATRIC

Beth is a physical therapist specializing in orthopedic and aquatic therapy, and owner of North County Water & Sports

Therapy Center in San Diego. Beth earned her PT degree from the University of Connecticut and earned her Doctor

of Physical Therapy degree from Boston University. She has achieved Certification and re-certification as a clinical

specialist in orthopedic physical therapy. As a Certified STOTT Pilates™ instructor, Beth incorporates the use of

Pilates basic principles into her exercise programs. Beth has a passion for education and the ability to motivate and

facilitate professional growth and lifelong learning among physical therapy students and graduates. Applying

evidence-based material to daily clinical treatment makes her one of the most recognized speakers in the USA and



Julie See, BS, AEA

Julie serves as AEA’s Director of Education and editor for Akwa magazine, the industry’s leading publication.

Following AEA’s global mission, she strives to mentor and encourage the next generation - both the exercise

professional and the exercise participant.


Lori A. Sherlock, EdD, AEA, ATRIC

Lori is an associate professor in the School of Medicine at West Virginia University where she teaches the aquatic

therapy curriculum within the division of Exercise Physiology. Lori is an AEA Aquatic Training Specialist, is a featured

author for Akwa magazine, and was the 2015 recipient of the AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional Global Award. She

holds numerous certifications and trainings in all aspects of aquatics.


Ruth Sova, MS, ATRIC

The Director of Education of ATRI and an internationally recognized leader in the Aquatic Therapy industry, Ruth, is

dedicated to the growth and betterment of the industry through her development efforts. She has founded six

successful businesses and holds numerous awards and honors. She educates and energizes audiences with her

presentations on personal growth, entrepreneurship, aquatic therapy-fitness, and business development. Sova

founded the Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute, Inc. (ATRI) a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the

professional development of health care professionals involved with aquatic therapy. She is founder of the Aquatic
