How to Promote Healthy Aging with Nutrition, Exercise, and Wellness Programs

        By Jennifer McGregor

Staying healthy as you age can be complicated. However, with the right approach to your nutrition, exercise, and mindset, you will discover that the quality of your day-to-day life improves. Here, The Aquatic Exercise Association offers a few practical, affordable tips to help you enjoy the benefits of healthy aging.

Wellness Programs

For overall support in your exercise and nutritional plan, you may want to consider joining a wellness program. What’s great about wellness programs is that you may even discover they are quite affordable, depending on your insurance. For example, if you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you should find out if you are eligible to enroll in a wellness program. The right wellness program is a helpful addition to supporting your nutritional goals.

Many Medicare Advantage plans offer both fitness and wellness programs. If you do not have one of these plans, then it is a good idea to begin searching for one that offers extra nutritional and/or wellness support. If you aren’t happy with your current choice, you can always make changes during the Open Enrollment Period. With the assistance of a wellness program, you will find that it’s much easier to maintain healthy lifestyle habits without breaking your budget.

Eating Right

Your body needs the right nutrients so that it can perform to the best of its abilities. As The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics explains, our nutritional needs change with age, generally requiring fewer calories. When you neglect nutrition by eating unhealthy foods, then chances are you will not feel your best. Thankfully, there are many options available today so that you can get the nutrients you need in a tasty, affordable way.

Eating healthy does not have to be boring. First and foremost, you should try to increase the number of fruits and vegetables that you eat. Learning a little bit about superfoods can give you some creative ideas on fun, exciting fruits and veggies that also pack a nutritional punch.

If you find yourself craving processed foods and refined sugars like cookies, cakes, brownies, and such, then it’s a good idea to substitute healthier alternatives. For instance, if you crave something crunchy and salty, try a healthy popcorn instead of chips. If you want something sweet, dried fruit could be just the ticket.

In fact, there are many foods that can satisfy your cravings without all the negative health consequences. For example, try eating dates and pecans for a rich, healthy dessert option. Eating more fruits throughout your day can also help to decrease your cravings for the kinds of sugary treats that cause inflammation and deplete your energy.

Staying Fit

According to Time, there are numerous benefits that come from establishing a regular exercise habit. For one, you will find that you are in a better mood and feel less stressed. Exercise also gives you better, more restful sleep and improved digestion. But even if you acknowledge the benefits, you may find it challenging to maintain an exercise routine.

If you are having trouble sticking to an exercise routine, try finding an activity you enjoy. For example, if you love spending time in the water, then consider taking up aquatic exercise, which is an excellent way to increase strength, joint mobility, and balance. This way you are getting exercise, but it does not feel like a chore because you are doing something you love. You can apply this same approach to anything else such as biking, hiking, and yoga.

Regularly using a fitness app can also make it easier to maintain a fitness schedule. If you notice that apps don't run smoothly on your phone, consider upgrading to a better smartphone. You can make the purchase more affordable by taking advantage of deals like lower monthly payments and phone trade-ins. A newer phone will be able to handle apps more efficiently, which, in turn, can help you stay motivated and keep pushing toward your fitness goals.

Eating right, exercising, and joining a wellness program are all incredibly helpful ways to promote healthy aging. But even if you acknowledge this, you still have to take steps to commit to a healthier lifestyle. Once you see - and feel - the results, you’ll be happy you did.
