A Holistic Approach: How to Achieve Overall Wellness in 2021

There is nothing like ringing in the New Year with a newfound sense of inspiration and determination. There is something in the season that encourages new beginnings and an opportunity for positive change in our lives. By engaging in wellness boosting, we increase health, longevity, and quality of life.

There is no better way to improve your wellness than putting yourself in an environment that promotes a system of healing and mental and physical health. To begin the New Year following principles of good health, consider a few tips for sustainably improving overall wellness.

Approach the Body Holistically

A holistic approach to healthcare means encouraging prevention, instead of simply treating disease or illness to help overall health. In other words, by approaching several factors that affect someone’s health like diet, exercise, environment, and spiritual and emotional health, it is easier to prevent disease and increase vitality. As the Huffington Post reports, the mind-body connection is strong and can make a significant impact in how people approach their health. By achieving mindfulness and awareness of the body as a whole, people can strengthen their connections to their own bodies and thus fortify their defenses against illness.

At the same time, approaching health holistically gets one closer to nature and allows for a more sustainable way of living. By promoting a good diet and more preventative measures, we focus on a minimal lifestyle centered on what the body and mind need to grow and be healthy.

How Mind-Body Exercises Can Heal

By approaching our health through an all-encompassing view of ourselves, we can achieve great changes and a reversal of negative and unhealthy habits. There are activities that encourage healing through a strengthening of the mind-body approach.

Some great examples include swimming, yoga, and meditation. These activities are not only very accessible, but they strengthen the connections between our bodies and mind, thus improving mental and physical health. Aquatic fitness is an ideal form of exercise because it's easier on the joints and allows you to move in ways that can't be done on land. Swimming also has strong mental benefits and is fun and accommodating for people of all fitness levels and backgrounds. Science Daily reports that yoga and meditation can help with depression and anxiety by strengthening mindfulness, awareness, and inner peace. This is because they place a great focus on breathing and movement. 

Diet & More

Of course, diet is a big component of any wellness plan. What you put into your body will play a big role in what you get out of it. However, be sure to talk to your primary care doctor or other healthcare professional before trying any specific diets or supplements. There is no one-size-fits all approach to diet and nutrition, and vitamins, supplements, and a new way of eating can all potentially interact with medications you’re taking, health treatments you’re undergoing, and specific health conditions you’re experiencing.

Once you’ve gotten the all-clear from your doctor, there are several ways to achieve wellness, including:

  • Eating a balanced diet with plenty of protein, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Experimenting with the Paleo diet. This focuses on animal proteins, including sustainably raised animals, nuts and seeds, roots, veggies, and fruits.
  • Getting a good-quality supplement, such as a powder. Supplements can help improve your energy and mood levels.
  • Being creative. Another way to engage the mind and body is to take part in a creative activity. This might include participating in arts and crafts or painting.
  • Taking care of your sleep. Ensuring that you implement a healthy dose of sleep every night keeps stress at bay and allows your body the proper time to heal and regenerate itself. If you're still having trouble falling asleep, consider whether you need to replace your pillow or mattress.

 

Achieving wellness does not happen overnight. It is an effort that takes a whole-body approach. It takes understanding how the body operates and how small changes in the way we live can have a tremendous impact. A sustainable approach to wellness includes reflecting on one’s relationship with the body, the mind, and our environment.
